More on the Barchusen Still

ABOVE: Here is Big E with a better view of our Barchusen Apparatus on a 3,000mL boiler.

ABOVE: This is what the conduit intersection looks like, viewing the condenser from the side. There is no mixing junction at the intersections, and the tubing has small glass stand-offs between the contacts.

ABOVE: Liquid crystal temperature indicators were applied along the path to monitor the vapor and condensate temperatures. The Barchusen at our reconstruction scale comes to equilibrium at 75’C.

ABOVE: This is what a characterization run of a binary solution 40%v/v ethanol in aqueous looks like through the Barchusen.

ABOVE: This is how the “tails” fraction appears using the Barchusen. The tails in this case is 1%v/v trans-cinnimaldehyde.
Since cinnamaldehyde is ready detected by taste and smell, each fraction was evaluated by organoleptic methods. Cinnamaldehyde has an odor threshold of 50-750 ppb and a flavor threshold of around 1000ppb. The organoleptic score was applied as follows:
0 – Not detectable
1 – Faintly detectable, near limit of threshold
2 – Detectable and balanced with ethanol
3 – Strongly detectable, dominant
